I love smoothies. Really LOVE them! But when it is cold outside ,it is hard to think about having an icy smoothie.

Adding a little bit of warming spice can balance out the ice-cold smoothie and boost the immune system — plus it tastes good, too! Among other benefits, spices like cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and turmeric have high levels of antioxidants.

Here are some of my winter experiments:

Pumpkin SmoothiePumpkin Smoothie

  • 2-3 Tbsp Trader Joes Pumpkin Butter (or canned pumpkin)
  • 1 cup Almond Milk
  • Frozen banana
  • Honey
  • Little bit cinnamon, nutmeg

Put ingredients in blender on high until well mixed.

Sounds like a dessert right? Well, check out these facts:
  Pumpkin is packed with Vitamin A.
  Almond milk has protein
  Bananas = potassium and fiber!
  Cinnamon regulates or reduces blood sugar (glucose) levels.
  Honey is a great source of antioxidants.

Mexican Chocolate SmoothieMexican Chocolate Smoothie

If you really want to warm from the inside, try adding a little Cayenne pepper to your green smoothie. Just a pinch is enough. You can also make a cocao smoothie with Cayenne. It tastes like a Mexican chocolate shake. If you ever have Mexican chocolate you know it is spicy and chocolatey goodness!

  • ½-1 cup frozen cherries (depending on how much cherry you like)
  • 1 banana-frozen or fresh
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach (or other leafy green)
  • 2 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 cup Almond milk
  • 1/8 tsp Cayenne pepper

Cacao is a good source of healthy fat and contains protein. Cacao also contains magnesium, iron, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, vitamin C, Omega-6 fatty acids, and calcium.
Cayenne has many health boosting properties. It is a well-known digestive aid, helps reduce atherosclerosis, and stimulates your circulatory system.  Cayenne pepper aids in breaking up and moving congested mucus and helps with allergy problems.

Keep up your good habit of drinking smoothies and juices, even when it’s cold outside!
