My interest in juicing and smoothies started for pure nutritional reasons. I wanted to get more nutrients in, but keep it a little lighter on the tummy before and after yoga class. The rest of my diet is mostly Whole Foods eating. I also LOVE bacon! As with anything, keeping a good balance is the key. I find that introducing more juice, smoothies, and raw foods gives me that good balance.
Last year I did a 21 Day Raw Food Reset through Young and Raw; I get a ton of recipe inspiration from them. I also visit our local Juiceland and Daily Juice locations regularly. They have some unusual recipes that sound weird but interesting, and indeed taste great. After I find a promising recipe somewhere, I try adding / subtracting ingredients to suit my tastes and make my own concoction at home.
If you are ever feeling sluggish and just need a refresh, try this smoothie. You can have one a day for a few days just to reset.
- 2 cups water or coconut water
- 1 tablespoon maca powder
- 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1/2 banana
- 3 pitted dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen pineapple, peach or mango
Place all your ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Add more water if you desire a thinner consistency.
Lately I have been cuckoo for cashew milk. Putting cashews in any recipe make for a creamy smooth consistency. Cashews are high in magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron and many other nutrients. Good for heart, bone health, and even help add shine to your hair! I like to make a big batch so I am set for a couple days.
- 1 1/2 cup raw cashews
- 3-5 dates (depends on date-size and your sweetness preference)
- 3-4 cups of filtered water
- optional – a couple of squirts of honey (to your liking)
Put all items in blender for 30-60 seconds on high. Pour into jars and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. It makes 2-3 servings, so you have enough for a couple of days.
This recipe is so versatile, you can add raw cacao, vanilla, greens, or any other flavor you like to this milk base. Or just enjoy on its own!
