How to Prepare for Your First Class

The PURE Yoga Texas method of hatha yoga, the Original Hot Yoga, is specifically designed for beginners. At first it may seem hard but with a little concentration, patience and determination you will be amazed at what you can accomplish and how great you will feel. Tips for starters:

  • HYDRATE: Not only water, but electrolytes to prevent possible headaches and cramping.Signs of dehydration include headache and nausea. Also, come to class on an empty stomach; allow 2 to 3 hours.
  • ARRIVE ON TIME: Plan to be at the studio 15 minutes before class to register and settle in.
    Bring a yoga mat, two towels and a big bottle of water with you. Wear comfortable workout clothes and prepare to sweat a lot; the room is heated to 105F.
  • BE KIND TO YOURSELF: For your first class, it is a victory to simply stay in the heated room for the entire 90-minute class. Feel free to sit down or skip a posture or two as your goal is simply to breathe normally. You’ll see improvement over time.
  • FOCUS AND CONCENTRATE: Be as still as possible between poses. Hatha yoga is a disciplined practice in concentration. It is as much
    a mental exercise as it is physical, creating a true mind and body connection.
  • BE COURTEOUS: Be clean, quiet, and respectful to others.
    Yoga practice is as much about how you treat others as it is about how you care for yourself.

SELF CONTROL: It takes discipline to simply show up for class. Once you are there, 90% of the work is done!

CONCENTRATION: Exercise your powers of concentration to focus on each pose and each breath, and continue to stay still in-between poses.

DETERMINATION: No problems if you fall out of a posture. Getting back in just one more time builds up your will power!

PATIENCE: You will continuously find small successes in your yoga practice in each pose. Don’t focus on the outcome (how the pose looks). Just try the right way, and good things will happen.

FAITH: During your yoga journey, not only will your class improve, but notice the changes outside the yoga room. Confidence and faith in yourself will serve you a lifetime!

PURE Yoga Texas /since 2003/

PURE Yoga Texas was initially established in Austin, Texas, in 2003, when Mardy Chen opened the first location in Davenport/Westlake. Her husband, Jeff Chen, joined her in 2008, and together they grew the Original Hot Yoga community in the Greater Austin area to four convenient locations. Our mission is simple and pure: We empower all people to improve their lives through regular practice of the Original Hot Yoga (the Bikram method), and inspire our students by serving as exemplary role models in the yoga room and our community.

The Original Hot Yoga is a sequence of 26 traditional yoga postures (asanas) with an opening and closing breathing exercise (pranayama) conducted over 90 minutes in a room heated to 105 degrees. The Bikram method of hatha yoga is the “Original Hot Yoga” from which many yoga teachers and yoga studios today have modified or incorporated into their own, self-styled yoga classes.

At PURE Yoga Texas, we carefully preserve the tradition of the original 90-minute class as we have learned from our yoga teachers, Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury. As a new or experienced yoga practitioner, you can be assured that you are receiving the unmatched benefits of an authentic Bikram method class!

Why 105 degrees and 90-minutes?

72 Yogis in TriangleMardy and Jeff have been practicing Bikram Yoga continuously since 1999. The more they practiced and taught the same, precise 26 posture sequence, the more they have been inspired by student testimonials describing the myriad of benefits they receive, including:

Practically speaking, the heated room raises the practitioner’s core body temperature several degrees over the first 55 minutes of class (the Standing Series). The remaining 35 minutes of class alternates yoga poses with “savasana,” a short 15 to 20 second relaxation pose (the Floor Series). The core temperature stays relatively constant during the Floor Series. During this time the body receives maximum benefit from the asanas as the warm body circulates and accelerates exchange of cellular waste and nutrients. In fact, scientific literature supports “heat therapy” for certain metabolic conditions. Practicing yoga poses in high heat is good for you!

Why PURE Yoga Texas?

Our teachers are all Certified Bikram Yoga Teachers, which means they have each graduated from the official 9-week Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. However, the journey of the yoga teacher only begins at that point!

The average teaching experience of PURE’s teaching staff is well over six years! As a team, we constantly develop our teaching skills through workshops and practical experience in the classroom, working with students of all ages and health conditions. We practice intermediate and advanced level classes to further deepen our practice and understanding of the Original Hot Yoga Class. Our collective approach to sharing knowledge with each other is what helps us build a thriving community of dedicated teachers and practitioners.

Mardy and Jeff further studied in North Calcutta in 2015 at the Ghosh Yoga College, the original school where Bikram and Rajashree learned from Bishnu Ghosh and his son, Biswanath Ghosh. The month-long residential training reinforced the authenticity, simplicity, and effectiveness of the Bikram method 26 posture sequence, suitable for anyone, at any age and any condition.
